Build a heatwave power outage kit
Blackouts and heatwaves travel together, and the combination is the dangerous version of both. Air conditioning load peaks, grids sag, and the outage arrives at 4pm on the hottest day of the year. The kit below assumes exactly that afternoon: no sockets, no fridge, no fans, for somewhere between an hour and a couple of days. US emergency guidance at Ready.gov treats extreme heat as a hazard to prepare for in advance, and this is the preparing.

A power station is a big battery with real sockets, and in a heat outage its job description is one line: run moving air. The arithmetic is friendlier than people expect. A typical compact station stores a few hundred watt hours, and a decent fan sips twenty to forty watts on its useful speeds. Three hundred watt hours over thirty watts is roughly ten hours, call it a full night of airflow across a bed once you subtract conversion losses. Run the fan from the station’s USB or car socket where possible; the AC inverter wastes a slice of every watt hour, and in a blackout every slice counts.
What a compact station will not do is run an air conditioner or a fridge for any meaningful time. Compressors eat hundreds of watts continuously and drain a small station before the evening news.
