Keep a laptop cool in a heatwave
Full disclosure: this website exists because of a laptop overheating. One of us watched a machine thermal-throttle itself into a slideshow, then crash, on a stretch of brutal afternoons, put a twenty-dollar fan tray under it, and the problem left. The gear list grew from there. So this guide is the founding use case, and the advice is the same advice that worked then: give the machine cooler air and an easier time breathing, and it will give you its full speed back.
Here is the short version. Get the laptop off soft surfaces and into moving air, put active airflow underneath it, keep it out of the sun, and shift the heavy work to cooler hours. Each step is boring. Together they are usually the whole fix.
What heat does to a laptop
Processors protect themselves. As internal temperatures climb, the machine first spins its fans to maximum, then starts throttling, quietly cutting its own speed to shed heat. Keep pushing and it reaches emergency shutdown. None of this is a malfunction; it is the machine choosing survival over your deadline. Manufacturers design consumer laptops around ordinary room temperatures, and most spec sheets put the ambient ceiling somewhere around 35°C. A heatwave room can sit above that for hours, which means the machine is being asked to dump heat into air nearly as warm as its own insides.
The thermal margin it loses has to come from somewhere, and it comes from performance. The same laptop that flies on a spring morning crawls through a video call in a hot attic office. People blame the software. It’s the weather.
Fix the surface first
A laptop on a duvet, sofa arm or your actual lap is running with a pillow over its face. The intake vents on most machines live on the bottom panel, and soft surfaces seal them while insulating the case. Hard, flat and slightly raised is the target: a desk, a tray, a couple of books under the rear edge. That one change drops internal temperatures more than any software tweak.
Then let it breathe actively.

A cooling pad is a tray of fans that feeds the laptop’s intakes with a constant supply of fresh air and carries case heat away. It draws its power from a USB port, adds no software, and works on any machine with bottom vents. This is the founding artifact of this site and it is still the highest-value fix on the page: cheap, dumb, effective. If your laptop’s vents are on the sides or rear instead, the pad still helps by cooling the chassis, just less dramatically.
Fix the air second
The pad recirculates room air, so the room sets the ceiling on what it can do. Two habits move that ceiling.
Keep the laptop out of direct sun. A dark slab in a sunbeam soaks up heat far faster than its fans shed it, and screens are miserable in glare anyway. The desk by the window is prime real estate in January and a toaster in July.
Give the desk moving air. A fan that crosses the desk helps the machine exactly the way it helps you, by replacing the warm air pocket with fresh.

And on multi-day heatwaves, the real fix is the room itself: curtains by day, night flushing, the whole routine from how to cool a room without AC. A machine in a 26°C room simply does not have this problem.
Fix the workload third
Heat is cumulative, so schedule against it. Exports, backups, big syncs and anything that pins the CPU belong in the early morning while the room is still holding last night’s coolness. Close the browser tabs doing secret work; a single runaway tab keeps fans howling all afternoon. Charging generates its own heat too, so on the worst days top the battery up in the cool hours instead of fast-charging at the 4pm peak. If the fans have been screaming for months regardless of weather, the machine likely wants dust cleared from its vents, which is a five-minute job with compressed air on most models.
A stubborn myth, briefly: putting a laptop in the freezer. Don’t. The performance problem returns in minutes and the condensation that forms inside the case can kill the machine for good. Cold air, yes. Freezers, no.
