How to cool a room without AC
Here is the whole method in one paragraph. Keep the sun off your windows from morning onwards. Keep windows and curtains closed while the air outside is hotter than the air inside. After dark, open everything and push the cool night air through. During the day, point moving air at people rather than at the room. Add evaporative cooling only if your air is dry. Every trick below is one of these five moves done well.
The order matters more than the gear. A fan in a sun-baked sealed room is a hair dryer. The same fan in a shaded room with a night-flushed thermal mass feels like a different climate.
Stop the heat at the glass
Most of the heat load in a summer room arrives as sunlight through windows. Once it has passed the glass and hit your floor, it has already become heat, and no fan will un-make it. The US Department of Energy lists shading alongside insulation and ventilation as the things that keep a home cool with barely any energy spent.
So the first upgrade is boring and passive. Cover the glass. Outside shading (shutters, awnings, a tree) beats everything because it stops the light before the window. Most renters can’t do outside shading, which leaves two realistic options that work from the inside.

Film and curtains solve different halves of the problem, and the combination beats either alone. Film rejects a share of solar energy at the glass all day with zero effort. The NHS heat advice is blunt on timing: close windows, curtains and blinds during the day, and open them at night once the outside temperature has dropped. If you do exactly one thing from this page, do that.
Run the night shift
After sunset the street cools faster than your room. From that moment, outdoor air is your free air conditioner, and the game is moving as much of it through the flat as possible before sunrise.
Cross-ventilation does the real work. Open windows on opposite sides of the home so air has an entry and an exit. A single open window swaps far less air, because the air has nowhere to go.
A fan multiplies the effect. Point it out of a window on the hot side of the home, blowing indoor air at the night sky. That sounds backwards and works brilliantly: the fan exhausts the day’s heat while cool air gets pulled in through the other windows. In the morning, before the street warms up, reverse the routine. Shut every window, close the curtains, and trap the coolness you banked overnight.
Walls, floors and furniture store a surprising amount of that overnight coolness. A properly night-flushed room drifts up slowly through the day instead of tracking the street. That stored coolness is what you are defending with the closed curtains.
Move air across skin, not around the room
Fans do almost nothing to air temperature. What they do is strip away the warm, humid layer of air sitting against your skin, which lets your sweat evaporate faster. Evaporating sweat is your body’s main cooling system, so a fan makes you feel several degrees cooler while the thermometer doesn’t move.
Two practical consequences. First, a fan pointed at an empty sofa is wasted electricity, so aim it where people actually sit and switch it off when you leave. Second, at extreme air temperatures fan use has limits: the NHS advises that electric fans can help when the room is below 35°C. Above that, moving air starts adding heat to your body faster than it removes it, and drinking water plus shade matter far more.

A tower fan earns its place here because it throws a tall, wide column of air across a bed or sofa rather than a narrow cone, and the good ones stay quiet enough to leave running while you sleep.
Add water, if your air is dry
Evaporative coolers pull air through a wet pad. The water evaporates and the air comes out genuinely cooler, the same physics as sweat. In dry air the drop is real and cheap to run. In muggy air the pad barely evaporates and the machine just makes the humidity worse.

The things that barely work
A bowl of ice in front of a fan cools the air for a few minutes over an area the size of a laptop. Fine for one person at a desk, useless for a room, and the melt refills the air with humidity. Spraying the floor with water works the same way and has the same catch. Opening the fridge cools your face while its compressor dumps more heat out the back than the door released. None of these are scams exactly. They are all tiny, short-lived versions of the real methods above.
