Evaporative cooler vs fan

Short answer. If your summer air is dry, an evaporative cooler gives you air that is genuinely colder than the room, for roughly fan-level running costs. If your summer air is humid, the evaporative cooler turns into a heavy, gurgling fan that also raises the humidity, and you should buy the plain fan.

Both machines cost a fraction of air conditioning to run. Neither one refrigerates anything. The difference is what they do to the air on its way to you.

What each machine actually does

A fan changes nothing about the air. It moves it. Moving air peels away the warm, damp boundary layer that clings to your skin, so your sweat evaporates faster and you feel cooler. The thermometer stays put; you don’t. That trick works in every climate, which is why the fan is the default answer. The catch is the extreme end: the NHS notes electric fans help when the room is under 35°C, and past that they mostly blow oven air at you.

An evaporative cooler (swamp cooler, if you grew up with one) pulls air through a soaked pad. Evaporating that water absorbs real heat, so the air leaving the machine is measurably cooler than the air entering it. You are running your body’s sweat trick, on the room’s air, before it reaches you. The US Department of Energy lists evaporative coolers among the machines that can serve as a home’s primary cooling where the climate suits them.

The phrase carrying all the weight there is “where the climate suits them”.

Humidity decides, so check yours

Evaporation slows as air fills with moisture. Dry desert air drinks water eagerly and comes out of the pad with a serious temperature drop. Air already heavy with moisture takes on almost none, so the drop shrinks toward zero while the machine keeps adding humidity to your room. Higher humidity also makes your own sweat less effective, so a machine that raises it is working against you twice.

A workable rule of thumb for buyers:

Check the humidity on a weather app during your hottest week, at the hottest hour. Coastal and monsoon-season air routinely sits above 50 percent. High desert afternoons often sit under 20.

One operating quirk that surprises people: an evaporative cooler wants a window open while it runs. It works in fresh air that gets pushed through and out, unlike an air conditioner’s sealed room. Run one in a shut box and the room turns into a greenhouse with a pond.

Cost, noise, and faff

On electricity, the two are in the same league, tens of watts to around a hundred depending on size and speed. Both are rounding errors next to any compressor. The evaporative cooler adds water to your costs and chores: the tank wants refilling on hot days, and the pads want cleaning, because a permanently damp pad in a warm room grows things you’d rather not breathe. A fan’s maintenance is dusting it.

Noise is a wash at low speeds. At full tilt the evaporative unit adds pump gurgle to the airflow sound. Neither approaches the drone of a portable air conditioner, which is a different argument entirely and lives in portable AC vs evaporative cooler.

If you settled on the fan, spend your money on quietness and a tall sweep of air rather than raw power; the room cooling guide shows fan placements that beat pointing it at your face. If you settled on the evaporative cooler, buy bigger than feels necessary. Undersized units run flat out, loudly, to do what a larger one does on its middle setting.

The verdict, one more time

Dry air, evaporative cooler. Humid air, fan. On the fence at 40 percent humidity, buy the fan first anyway; it costs less, needs nothing, and stays useful even if you later add the cooler for the driest weeks. The fan is never the wrong purchase. The evaporative cooler is only ever the right one in the right air.
