Portable AC vs evaporative cooler
Short answer. Humid climate, or a room you must keep sealed, or heat that is flatly dangerous: the portable air conditioner is the only machine here that actually refrigerates, so it wins by default. Dry climate, tolerable heat, or any situation where the electricity bill or a missing window vent rules the AC out: the evaporative cooler delivers most of the comfort for a small fraction of the power.
They look like cousins in the shop. They are opposites in every way that matters.
Two different physics
A portable AC is a refrigerator for air. A compressor pumps heat out of the room through a fat exhaust hose, and the room genuinely gets colder and drier, whatever the weather outside. That last clause is the whole sales pitch. It works on the muggiest night of the year, which is exactly the night that sends people to hospital.
An evaporative cooler soaks a pad and pulls air through it. Evaporation absorbs heat and the outgoing air is cooler and wetter than what went in. No compressor, no hose, no sealed room. Its power draw is fan-sized. Its weakness is non-negotiable: the drier the air, the better it works, and in properly humid air it barely works at all. The window line deserves a pause. A portable AC without its hose out a window is a heater with extra steps: it dumps the room’s heat, plus the compressor’s own, right back inside. The sealed-versus-open thing trips people up in the other direction too. An AC wants the room shut tight. An evaporative cooler wants air passing through and out, or the humidity piles up and the cooling stalls. Run each one the other machine’s way and both disappoint.
Cost over a summer
The purchase gap is large and the running gap is larger. A compressor pulls several times the power of a pad-and-fan, hour after hour, and heatwaves demand long hours. How to choose in one minute
Buy the portable AC if any of these is true: your humid nights are the problem, someone vulnerable needs a guaranteed cool room, or the heat in your area reaches genuinely dangerous levels and you need certainty rather than relief.
Buy the evaporative cooler if all of these are true: your hot-season humidity sits low, you can leave a window cracked, and your goal is comfort at minimal running cost rather than a cold sealed room.
